Hyaluronic Acid (HA) has traditionally been incorporated cosmetically as a hydrophobic (water-loving) ingredient to diminish trans-epidermal moisture loss. It attracts and holds 1000 times its weight in water. However, HA is a large molecule and unable to penetrate past the outer layer of skin, hydrating only the outer layer.
Hyaluronic acid is a constituent of the extracellular matrix found deeper in the skin (dermis), past the outer layer (epidermis). It is vital for transporting nutrients and for intercellular communication. It also keeps our collagen and elastin fibers supple and pliable, making our skin plump.
Youthful skin is hydrated due to the large amounts of hyaluronic acid in the dermis.
With age, our skin produces less amounts of Hyaluronic acid naturally, leaving the skin dehydrated. In fact, beginning around age 25, HA production diminishes each year by 1 to 1.5%. By age 50, HA production has been reduced by 25% or more! Add in our dry winter air and BAM!
